The race to replace Andrew Scheer as leader of the federal Conservative Party is officially on.
Scheer announced his resignation yesterday, after news broke that he used Conservative Party money to pay for his children's private schooling.
However, Scheer's office says his choice to resign as the Tory leader was not based on those revelations.
Among those who could be competing for the job?
- Former interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose
- Conservative MP Erin O'Toole.
- Former Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall.
- Mark Mulroney (The son of former Progressive Conservative prime minister Brian Mulroney)
- Ontario Finance Minister Rod Phillips.
- Former B.C. premier Christy Clark.
- Conservative MP Michelle Rempel
Ontario Premier Doug Ford won't be among those applying for the job. A Ford spokesperson says the premier wants to focus on the province instead.
The Conservatives already have a policy convention scheduled for April in Toronto.
The last time the Conservatives held a leadership contest in 2017, when there were 16 candidates.
