Ontario’s Medical Officer Of Health is once again appealing for people to get vaccinated against COVID-19, especially as kids head back to school.
Dr. Kieran Moore said yesterday that more vaccinations need to be achieved in order to negate the impacts of the more infectious Delta variant.
Moore said, “I do hope we’ll have an uptick in the near future. After a long weekend like this we normally do see the increase in cases of COVID-19 later in the week and I think once people realize this virus isn’t going away and the risk will continue throughout the fall and into the winter that alone should be an incentive to come forward and get protected.”
He added the unvaccinated are 7 more times likely to be infected with COVID-19, 24 times more likely to be hospitalized due to the virus and 43 times more likely to be admitted to ICU.
He said that data shows an estimated 63-thousand cases of the virus have been prevented in individuals over 18 as a result of the province’s vaccination program.
Moore says since there is currently no vaccine approved in Canada for children under 12, it’s our collective responsibility to protect children by surrounding them with people who are vaccinated and follow the best practices to prevent the spread of the virus.
He said, “The stats show it. You have a seven times higher risk of getting COVID and a 24 times higher risk of getting hospitalized (if you are unvaccinated) and when you get hospitalized it’s because your lungs are filling up with fluid and you can’t get oxygen into your bloodstream and you’re fighting for air.
The province’s top doc added, “We want to protect those that are unvaccinated right now and we need you to come forward and get immunized to protect yourselves, your community, the health system, and all of your loved ones.”
