Today marks the third anniversary of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash tragedy.
Sixteen people were killed and 13 others injured after a semi ran a stop sign at an intersection in eastern Saskatchewan on April 6, 2018.
A virtual tribute is being held at St. Augustine Catholic Church and livestreamed on the City of Humboldt’s Facebook page starting at 4:30 p.m.
The service will include live performances by local musical artists and a candle lighting ceremony. Tolling of the church bells and a moment of silence will take place at approximately 4:50 pm to mark the approximate date and time that the tragedy occurred 3 years ago.
The “2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Tribute Page” on the City of Humboldt’s website, will be updated with memorable photo galleries of each of the 29 who were involved in the tragedy. Additionally, an on-line exhibit hosted by the Humboldt & District Museum & Gallery, consisting of a representation of the outpouring of gifts of love and support that have been received will be launched the morning of April 6th, 2021. The link to this exhibit will be made available on the “2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Tribute Page” and on the Museum’s landing page.
“We are tremendously grateful for everyone who will take a moment on April 6th to remember the tragedy that struck home for so many people. In turn, we are thinking of all of those who have been affected not only by this tragedy but by the pandemic that has claimed so many lives in the past year. It is times like these that we need one another. Always believe there is hope and remain resilient,” said Mayor Behiel.
Mayor Behiel has proclaimed Tuesday, April 6th, 2021 as “2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Day” in the City of Humboldt and encourages all citizens to observe a moment of silence at approximately 4:50 pm, no matter where they may be.
Meanwhile, the Broncos Memorial Committee has unveiled a plan for a $25-million tribute centre, with a gallery honouring the victims as well as an arena and fitness and physiotherapy area.
