Police have been preparing themselves for the first day back to school.
Central Region OPP Sgt. Peter Leon says drivers need to keep their attention on the road, especially in school zones.
He says the speed limit in school zones can range from 30 to 50 km/h an hour depending on what community it is.
Leon says motorists need to reduce their speed, keep their eyes moving for potential hazards and be alert, as parents and school buses will be dropping off children, and kids will be walking to school, many could be on bicycles in the warm weather, so he says there will lots of activity in and around a school, both at the beginning and the end of the day.
Leon says when a school bus stops, the driver will activate flashing red lights on the rear of the bus, a stop arm will come out from the side, and there will be a bar across the front, which allows students getting off to get safely in front of the bus.
Motorists who do not stop for a school bus can face a fine of between $400 and $2000 and six demerit points for the first offence, and with each following offence, the fine can range between $1,000 to $4,000 and up to six months in jail.
