Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital has developed a plan to improve communication with deaf and hard of hearing patients in the emergency department.
Melissa McKee of Orillia is deaf and filed a complaint with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario in January.
In a statement today, the hospital said the matter was resolved at a mediated session of the tribunal and that the plan has the support of McKee.
OSMH will give patients the option to receive notification by text message directly to their phone.
As well, plans are in the works to include a flashing/vibrating pager to patients, as well as incorporating confidential messaging as part of the changes to the way the hospital registers and schedules patients.
The statement said the solutions are also designed to enhance communication with patients who are blind or sight impaired.
