Ontario is scrapping the Drive Clean program.
Premier Doug Ford made the announcement this morning at a repair shop in Toronto.
Ford said the outdated program will come to an end next April.
The Premier added that a new and enhanced program will take its place, targeting heavy-duty vehicles.
He added that cancelling Drive Clean will save tax payers upwards of $40-million per year.
Ontario becomes the final province to end emissions testing after British Columbia ended their program in 2014.
Environment Minister Rod Phillips said more than 16% of passenger vehicles were flagged annually when Drive Clean was launched 20 years ago.
On-road emissions have declined drastically through a combination of older vehicles coming off the road and tighter gasoline restrictions.
Owner of Auto Centre Dufferin in Shelburne, Steve Bowles says they've been a Drive Clean Agent since 1999.
He says there's been a strong decline in the tests they had to do over the past few years, so it's no surprise that it's been discontinued.
