There is no Chicken Little syndrome at the Simcoe County District School Board over the legalization of recreational marijuana.
John Dance, Associate Director and Superintendent of Human Resources, says policies were changed over the last several months, and while there is no specific reference to cannabis, all restricted drugs are prohibited.
Dance says they don't anticipate legal cannabis to be an issue in schools, as students should not have the drug at anytime, noting other than the Adult Learning Centres, most students are not 19 years of age.
He says there is a code of conduct in place for staff and students, and Dance says that is expected to be followed.
In fact, he says the student one is very explicit about what is allowed and what isn't allowed.
As for board staff, Dance says for most people the change won't make any difference at all because they know they can't take something that would cause impairment, whether it is alcohol or cannabis, before they go to their workplace.
He believes staff and students are responsible about adjusting to this new world and he feels in the school system it shouldn't present an issue.
