Marijuana is officially legal to purchase and consume in Canada.
Starting Wednesday morning, Ontario residents can purchase cannabis through the Ontario Cannabis Store.
While the federal Liberals promised to legalize pot during the 2015 election campaign, health officials are only beginning to campaign for safe consumption.
Public Health Promoter Jacqueline Uprichard says Canadians under the age of 25 are being advised to avoid cannabis use, as their brains continue to develop.
Uprichard says health officials are aligning their marijuana messaging with other substances known to cause harm, including cigarettes and alcohol.
In Ontario, you will be allowed to smoke pot in the same places as cigarettes, but driving while intoxicated on marijuana will be prohibited.
While driving, you will also be required to keep cannabis out of reach of your vehicle's occupants.
Uprichard says a two-pronged approach is being taken to promote public health in a time of legal pot.
The first is to reduce the harms associated with cannabis use, while the second is to prevent or delay Canadians from using pot, especially youth.
