Simcoe Grey Tory MPP Jim Wilson has resigned his cabinet post to seek treatment for addiction issues. The premier's office issued a brief statement Friday evening, saying the resignation will take effect immediately.
Wilson was the minister of economic development, job creation and trade— and just hours before the announcement he appeared alongside Premier Doug Ford at an event in Sarnia.
Wilson has also quit the Conservative caucus but will remain as a local MPP.
Government House Leader Todd Smith will take over Wilson's portfolio in the interim.
Wilson is 55 and was first elected in 1990.
