Simcoe Muskoka residents are being reminded to avoid eating romaine lettuce and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce.
The local Health Unit is addressing the outbreak of E. coli infections in Ontario, Quebec and several states in the United States linked to romaine lettuce.
There are 18 cases of E. coli across Ontario and Quebec linked to exposure to the lettuce.
E. coli is a naturally occurring bacteria that live in the intestines of cattle, poultry and other animals that can be transmitted through food or water that has been contaminated.
Most people who get ill from an E. coli infection recover on their own, but some people, including pregnant women, those with weakened immune systems, young children and older adults are more at risk for developing serious complications.
Symptoms can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea and vomiting.
