With more snow falling this weekend there more incentive for riders to hit the lakes and trails with their snowmobiles — and while the snow adds to the fun, sled safety should be everyone’s number one priority.
International Snowmobile Safety weeks runs from today,Sunday January 16th, until Saturday January 22nd.
“Safe Riders, you make snowmobiling safe”, is this years theme, and John Britten, President of the Orillia and District Snowmobile Club, says it’s an essential message.
Britten tells us the purpose of having this safety week reminds riders that they need to make sure trails are open to make it a safe experience, especially this early in the season.
Britten shares that safe snowmobiling really means staying on an open trail and checking to make sure you’re not wandering off the path.
Britten points out very few accidents happen when you are on the trails; he also says common sense is a great safety tool.
Snowmobiling is enjoyed by nearly 4 million people across North America, nearly 1000 riders are already registered in Orillia and area alone.
Area trails are not officially open yet, but that could change come the beginning of the week given our recent snow fall, check conditions on offsc.on.ca before heading out.
