Nintendo Wii and Mario Kart video games are being brought into the classroom as an educational tool.
Special Education Resource Teacher Julie Johnson at Goodfellow Public School in Alcona says the games can be used in a literacy and math context.
Her project was inspired by an Ontario Ministry of Education document from 2004 which suggested using popular culture as a learning tool.
Games-Based programs like these are actually popular in Scotland and have been used there for a number of years.
Johnson will be using the program as a learning tool for herself and will be documenting how the games effect the outcome of learning, particularly in those students who are working below expected levels.
Principal David Brownlee says the school is proud to be a part of such an innovative and exciting classroom initiative.
The project will run from the end of February until April and is funded by MISA – a Managing Information for Student Achievement grant.
