Efforts are underway to try and interest more women here in the Orillia area and the rest of Ontario in running for office in this Octobers Provincial Election.
To that end, the group Equal Voice has received a commitment from all three leaders of Ontario’s political parties to actively recruit women as candidates in the fall election.
Equal Voice Co chair Rebecca Scott says all three parties are about one quarter of the way through the nomination process and so far about 33 per cent of those nominated are female.
She says what they are aiming for 33 per cent of the legislature made up of women politicians.
Currently only 26 per cent of MPPs are women for a total of 28 members.
Scott says they just have to elect 8 more women to reach their goal.
She says one of the biggest concerns potential women politicians have revolve around family and trying to balance that with their career.
However she believes now that all three party leaders say they want more women to run for office, she believes many more people will come forward.
