Dry conditions have prompted a full fire ban for residents in Ramara Township.
The Ramara Fire Department called a full fire ban yesterday, banning all open-air burning until further notice.
Kawartha Lakes also has called for a ban, while Oro and Severn Townships have not.
Fire chief for Severn Eric Dowell said that the situation in his township isn’t as serious as it is in Ramara, which has more open space than Severn.
Ramara Fire Administrator Tony Stong explains that they called the ban after dealing with two fairly serious fires this week; one of which saw about 250 bails of hay catch fire, while the other saw 2 acres of grass go the very next day.
Stong blamed the excessive wind over the past few weeks and the sun for the dry conditions.
The Ramara ban is a complete ban with no exceptions. No open-air burning is allowed in the township until the ban is lifted.
Stong says the ban will continue until they get enough rain to eliminate the hazardous conditions, but adds that as soon as things green up the ban will be lifted.
