A recent survey by the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) points to a growing business sector and a big jump in the number of self employed aboriginal citizens.
Research Analyst Stephen Scott says the survey effectively dashes the stereotype that all Aboriginal businesses are arts and crafts based.
The survey identifies a growing presence in the knowledge and technology sectors as well as construction and natural resources.
It also points out that the majority of business owners did not use any Government grants or assistance in starting up their business.
Scott says most people were either not aware of any available Government help or became too frustrated with the process – while others failed to see any benefit in applying for any assistance.
The survey shows Ontario as having the greatest concentration of Aboriginal businesses – making up 23 percent of the national total.
It also shows a 32 percent increase in the number of self employed Aboriginal citizens since a similar Stats Canada study back in 2006.
Scott says creating a strong business sector is essential to the future of Aboriginal people.
He says the CCAB is aiming to promote the benefits of an Aboriginal business network – as one does not currently exist.
