There is much celebration in Washington and New York today, with the announcement by U.S. President Barack Obama that Osama bin Laden is dead. The al-Qaida leader, the world’s most wanted terrorist, was attacked and killed by U.S. military forces at a house outside of Islamabad, Pakistan.
Jubilant Americans gathered by the thousands outside the White House and at Ground Zero in New York, cheering, waving flags and chanting “U.S.A” over and over again.
World leaders are praising the killing. Prime Minister Harper says Canada receives the news with “sober satisfaction,” adding it’s not the end of the fight against global terrorism. British Prime Minister David Cameron calls it “a massive step forward” in the fight against global terrorism. And President Obama, who approved the raid, calls it “the most significant achievement to date” in the U-S battle against al-Qaida.
Bin Laden’s body has been buried at sea, at a secret location.
