In an effort to reduce cycling injuries in children and young people, Helmuts For Kids supplies helmuts for all children who need them…and they also provide educational material for schools.
For the first time, the program is coming to Simcoe County. There will be two assemblies today in Midland to kick off the program for 2011 in Simcoe County…one at Mundy Bay Public School…the other at Monsignor Castex Catholic School.
Helmuts For Kids wants to distribute 500 helmuts in 2011.
The program is a partnership between the county’s school board, the Catholic school board, the Midland police service, the district health unit and Rastin & Associates.
Cycling-related injuries in children and young people account for 60% of hospitalization in this group, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Wearing a helmut can reduce risk of brain injury up to 88%. The Helmut For Kids program’s goal is to make sure all kids have a helmut.
