Four area groups haveĀ received a combined total of $95,014 in grant money from the Healthy Communities Fund for 2011-2012 through the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport.
Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop has announced that The Biminaawzogin Regional Aboriginal Womens Circle has received a $36,884 grant, Community Living Huronia $3,270, Huronia Trails and Greenways $45,460, and the Township of Oro Medonte $9,400.
Dunlop says these funds will help stimulate health promotion in Simcoe North will benefit many residents in the area.
The grant to the Biminaawzogin Regional Aboriginal Womens Circle will enable the development and delivery of a holistic, culturally based health promotion initiative that will provide: increased access to nutrition information and physical activity, and improved mental health and resiliency for women affected by family violence.
This grant will enable Community Living Huronia to develop and deliver a healthy eating and active living program for members of the supported independent living program.
Huronia Trails and Greenways will use their grant to engage people with intellectual disabilities through a trails walk program, target people under 30 to increase their physical activity levels through use of the trails, promote additional urban loops in trails to entice new users.
The grant to the Township of Oro Medonte, in collaboration with the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, will provide older adults access to: appropriate types of physical activity, strength and balance training, nutrition classes, preventative injury programming and education as well as support tobacco cessation.
