The battle to save a small rural Simcoe County School has made its way right to the door of the Premiers office.
Members of the Moonstone Elementary School Enhancement Team have fired off a letter to Premier Dalton McGuinty demanding he put a stop the the closure of rural schools, and take action to ensure that Moonstone Elementary School remains open.
Lila Osborne says that school is the heart and soul of their small community and if it is closed, as proposed by the Simcoe County School Board, it would spell the death of the village.
She says the board has already made the decision to close the school even before the Accomodation Review Process begins, which does not happen until September.
Osborne also says declining enrolment is not an issue at Moonstone Elementary, as the student population has remained stable over the past 10 years and is projected to remain stable for the next several years as well.
She says the Premier has stated that his government’s goal is to build strong rural communities.
Osborne says closing Moonstone Elementary is not the way you go about doing that.
