The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is stepping into the social media arena to talk about the effects of alcohol.
Manager of the Injury and Substance Misuse Program Janice Greco says this pilot project is being launched to test the effectiveness of social media – blogging, Facebook, Twitter, etc – in getting their message of good health out to the public.
Greco says since alcohol is so widely consumed and the potential negative health effects are often ignored – the Health Unit determined alcohol consumption as a good topic to start with.
The issue being addressed is not so much problem drinking – it’s more about what most people consider normal, social drinking.
Greco says women should consume no more than 9 drinks per week while men should not drink more than 14 drinks in a week – or one to two drinks per day.
She adds there are incentives for residents of Simcoe Muskoka, over the age of 19, to take part in this latest education campaign.
Greco says if you take part in the health unit’s quizzes on alcohol consumption – there could be an iPad 2 in it for you!
