Every seat in Council Chambers was full as Orillia City Council heard the report outlining space allocation at the new library currently being constructed.
Last night’s council meeting suddenly took a drastic turn in terms of volume when the much anticipated report on the feasibility of moving city hall to the second floor of the new library.
The report points out a library that is larger than the City of Orillia will require for many years to come – and that the building can easily accommodate the library and the city’s needs.
Some of those who packed council chambers resorted to shouting down some councillors while applauding others.
Eventually some councillors became agitated at the constant delays and proceeded to chastise the noisemakers about the lack of decorum.
Mayor Angelo Orsi – who had originally called for the report – says he was looking for ways to save money and saw the library as a potential money saver.
Orsi says although the crowd attending the meeting were overwhelmingly not in support of using the library for any other purpose – he still maintains the library will be a burden to the tax payers.
He also adds since a big part of his election campaign was based on the cost of the library – those who object to the idea that the library is too large form a minority of the population.
