Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton describes the debate going on in the House of Commons over the back-to-work Legislation as essentially a fillibuster by the NDP Opposition.
Stanton tells us the NDP Leader Jack Layton introduced an amendment to the bill which each member allowed to speak for 10 minutes, followed by a 5 minute question and answer.
With well over 100 NDP members saying they want to speak, that means only 4 speak an hour, so they should need most of the day to get through the list.
Stanton says this move by the NDP is essentially a fillabuster.
Stanton says once the process is complete they will vote on the amendment, which should be defeated because of the majority government. Then they get back to the main motion and then on to the committee as a whole, where members can speak again, with no time limit.
Stanton feels that the process will go through most of the weekend before they finally vote on the bill.
Stanton says the government is determined to get Canada Post back to work and that it’s necessary because of the economic recovery which the dispute is affecting.
