With the January 22 deadline for Ontario municipalities to decide whether to opt in or opt out of hosting retail cannabis stores, Orillia council committee will tackle the issue tonight.
Staff have presented councillors with a list of the pros and cons of playing host to pot shops.
The first 25 stores are expected to open April 1 and will only be located in communities with a population of more than 50,000.
As well, council committee will consider a by-law that would ban smoking outdoors on property owned by the City such as parkland, trails, parking lots, and besides a ban on tobacco, it would also prohibit the smoking of marijuana and e-cigarettes.
Whatever decisions are made tonight must still be ratified by council at the January 21 meeting.
