On top of the usual holiday enforcement campaigns, police will be out in force this holiday weekend reminding drivers about the “Move Over” law.
It requires drivers to slow down and proceed with caution when passing an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the highway with its lights activated.
If the highway has more than one lane, motorists are required to move over a lane.
Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop says he wishes the government would have approved his private members bill which would have included tow truck operators under the legislation as well.
Dunlop says had that amendment been approved, that tragic accident where two transport truck drivers were struck and killed on Highway 400 several weeks ago may have been avoided.
He says the move over legislation is a good law protecting emergency workers, but he hopes in the future it can be changed to include tow truck operators as well.
