Its back to school for thousands of students here in Orillia and Simcoe County and the OPP are out with some words of advice for Motorists.
Slow down and take it easy when driving and watch out for children on their way to school.
OPP Constable Gerry Dwyer says drivers should stay sharp because the children will be excited about going back to school and traffic safety probably is the last thing on their mind.
He says increased traffic volume, pedestrians who appear out of nowhere and exuberant distracted youngsters can all make the fall ritual of returning to school a challenge.
Police encourage drivers to slow down, look for pedestrians, follow all speed limits, stop for school buses, pay extra attention at crosswalks and be patient.
Dwyer says school parking lots and adjacent streets are extremely busy during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times, and can hide dangerous surprises like a student walking out from between parked cars.
He also has some advice for college and university students who this week will be in the process of moving into residence or apartments.
Dwyer says if you are using a pick up or trailer to move furniture make sure the cargo is loaded properly and is well secured.
He also says its good idea to have a spare tire for any trailer, so you don’t have to leave your property unattendedĀ by the side of the road while you get the flat fixed.
