Ontario Provincial Police have launched another week-long blitz to stop people from talking on the cellphone or texting while they’re driving.
The “Phone In One Hand…Ticket in the Other” campaign kicked off this morning and police will be looking for anyone, texting or talking on the cell without a hands-free device and if you’re caught you will face a fine of $155.
Police say distracted driving has been identified as a factor in almost 5,000 collisions on roads and highways patrolled by the provincial force so far this year. And they say hundreds of people have close calls every day, but drivers continue to use cellphones while driving.
So far this year, OPP have written more than twice the number of tickets for distracted driving over the same period last year.
