The City of Orillia will continue to pursue a research partnership with Lakehead University with regard to soil remediation at the 255 West Street South property.
Councillor Patrick Kehoe presented a motion to that effect at last night’s council meeting.
The motion contained a request that a reserve fund of 1.5 million dollars be re-allocated form the Major Capital Facilities Reserve Budget – a request that did not sit well with all of the councillors.
Councillor Tony Madden expressed concern about local tax dollars being used for this research project – adding the Provincial and Federal Governments should be kicking in some dollars.
Councillor Linda Murray responded by stating she was in favour of seeking government funding – but also pointed out the property is ultimately the City’s responsibility.
Councillor Patrick Fogarty presented an ammendment to the motion calling for a report from City staff on the issue – while allowing the pursuit of a research partnership to continue.
The motion along with the ammendment passed.
