Public flu clinics open this week – and the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reminding all of us of the importance of getting your shot.
Maryanne Holmes, the Supervisor of the Preventable Diseases Program at the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit says it’s still just as important as ever to get your shot.
Holmes says the flu shot is the safest and most effective way to protect your self against the flu and slow down its spread.
She adds it’s particularly important for those who frequent hospitals or long term care facilities to get vaccinated in order to protect those most vulnerable.
Along with getting the shot, it’s also a good idea to wash your hands frequently to stop the spread of germs and viruses.
Holmes says those who are afraid to get the shot should know you cannot catch the flu from the vaccine – however it does take your body up to two weeks to build up an immunity to the flu.
