A group of Georgian College students here in Orillia have come up with a different way to raise money for charity.
They want the city to dedicate five downtown parking meters to be used to collect funds for charity.
Angel Plaskitt is one of the students involved and this idea could generate a substantial amount of money for charity.
She says theĀ plan would see five downtown parking meters dedicated to charity and another five used as donation stations.
Parking at the dedicated meters would be like parking at regular meters, except all of the money inserted would go to charity. City bylaw officers would put into a different bag.
Plaskitt hoped the program would raise $3,500 per year for the cause.
All of the meters would be painted by local artists. The proposed plan has come about as part of Georgian College’s field placement for the social service worker program. It focuses on community projects.
This particular group is paired with the hospital’s Key Program, which provides assistance to the homeless and at-risk.
The students presented their plan to city politicians at Monday’s council meeting and Plaskitt says she was pleased with the reaction they received from the councillors.
The plan is to have the Community Foundation of Orillia and Area as the project’s governing body.
The money would be doled out with the foundation’s semi-annual grants program
