More from Orillia Council on saying yes to pot retail stores…
Mayor Steve Clarke says that by opting in, Council is supporting all levels of government in their efforts to get illegal drugs off the street.
Although it's still unknown when a cannabis store could potentially locate in Orillia, opting-in means stores could locate in Orillia after April 1st provided they get a license.
But the City won’t see any during the first round of licenses, because the Province is only granting them to companies that are in municipalities that have over 50,000 residents.
The Mayor says that when new lotteries become available and Orillia is in the running, Council will request that the stores not be allowed to locate within 150 metres of sensitive areas like child care centres and public libraries.
