A by-law banning smoking, vaping tobacco and cannabis outdoors on city owned or leased property has been passed by Orillia City Council.
There are exemptions for the Nordia property on Hunter Valley Road that has a designated smoking area, and during special events at the Stephen Leacock Museum, if the city issues a smoking permit.
The smoking ban covers city parking lots, trails, parks, beaches, municipal buildings, on or within a boat located or docked on City-owned or leased property, unless the vessel has cooking, sleeping and toilet facilities.
The city will hire a part-time Municipal By-law Enforcement Officer to assist in enforcing the by-law, which begins May 15.
Signage will be added to alert residents and visitors of the ban, and there will be a public education campaign.
The costs are being covered through provincial funding as a result of the legalization of marijuana.
