A Canadian Coast Guard ship has made it into Midland Harbour after an epic battle with thick ice. The Pierre Radisson spent Thursday bashing a path through ice several meters thick around Hope Island. It was the third try in the last few weeks to open the harbour, to allow the great lakes freighter Baie Comeau to leave her winter berth. The coast guard says strong winds through much of the winter had densely packed the ice into the harbour approaches.
