The Canadian U17 Junior Men’s National Team lost 10-5 in eight innings against the United States to open the Pan American Softball Championship. Team Canada took a 3-0 lead into fifth but saw the Americans score two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings before Canada tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh to force the extra inning.
Canada opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second. After loading the bases on a pair of walks and a bunt single by Mason McKay (Tavistock, Ont.), Andrew Van Boekel (Bright, Ont.) lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield. The following inning, Ryan Bicknell (Prince Albert, Sask.) led off with a walk and scored on a double over the first baseman by Connor Brooks (Napanee, Ont.). Jackson Pegelo ( Cargill, Ont.) followed with a single to center to score Brooks and give Canada a 3-0 lead.
Reese Yantzi (Shakespeare, Ont.) started the game in the pitcher’s circle for Canada and held the United States scoreless through four innings before being replaced by Brooks. The first two American batters drew walks to start the fifth and both scored on a triple over the left fielder as USA cut the lead to 3-2. The following inning, USA loaded the bases with no outs on three walks as Nathan Running (Innerkip, Ont.) came out in relief of Brooks. Running got two big strikeouts, but the next batter chopped a single through the middle of the infield to push two runs in to score as the Americans took a 4-3 lead. The following batter also singled to center, but McKay threw a runner out at the plate to keep it a one run game.
In the bottom of the sixth, Joey Rousseau (St-Charles-de-Bellechasse, Que.) hit a one-out double to the right field corner and advanced to third on a ground out, but the next batter flew out on a great catch by the left fielder. In the seventh, Brooks was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second. With two outs, pinch-hitter Owen Rahn (Durham, Ont.) lined a single over the first baseman to score Brooks and tie the game, sending the game to an extra inning.
Starting with a runner on second due to the international tie-breaker rule, the United States got a walk followed by a single, with an error on the centerfielder allowing the go-ahead run to score and putting runners on second and third. Three walks forced two more runs in to score, followed by an RBI single to left and another walk to make the score 10-4. Canada scored a run on a fielder’s choice and had two runners on base after an error in their half of the eighth, but a ground out to third ended the game.
Yantzi allowed two hits and struck out six batter over four innings, while Brooks allowed four runs on a hit and five walks with three strikeouts in an inning of work. Running took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits and five walks with four strikeouts in two innings and two thirds. Brody Fraser (Upper Nine Mile River, N.S.) retired the only better he faced. Offensively, Brooks had a double, a walk, a hit by pitch, drove in a run and scored twice, while Pegelo and Rahn each had a single and an RBI. Rousseau added a double, McKay had two singles and Bicknell had three walks and a run batted in.
Team Canada (0-1) will be looking to bounce back when they play Guatemala (1-0) at 8:00pm CST (9:00pm EDT) on Monday.

Well Sudbury was another world on Saturday, November 2nd as they endured an early season winter blizzard just two days before the 2019 High School Provincial OFSAA Cross Country Championships at Kivi Park. Over 6 inches of sloppy wet stuff dropped to whiten the ground and make course conditions treacherous, messy, slippery and just plain tough to race in. Even just walking around in winter boots was slippery. Race day temps hoovered around freezing with bouts of snow and/or rain throughout the day.
The Georgian Bay Coyotes had 4 members represented at OFSAA this year and all of them were part of the C.C.I. school team in Collingwood. Training mostly with their school team this Fall, they all ran strong races and represented our Coyotes and their school well.
To qualify for OFSAA, the athlete had to place in the top 6 in their respective Regional Championships and/or be one of the top 2 teams in that Region. All 4 Coyotes qualified as part of a team and Hailey Abbott also qualified as an individual as she won the Grade 10 Junior Girls 5km race at the GBSSA Regional Championships the week before.
Avery O'Neil started things off in the Novice Grade 9 Girls 4km race. Avery had a solid race with her first experience at OFSAA as she placed 110th of 255 girls with a time of 18:39.28. Devlin Gillis also had his rookie experience at OFSAA. His usual strong sprint to the finish stopped the clock at 16:35.34, taking 124th spot of 261 competitors in the Grade 9 Novice Boys 4km race.
In the Grade 10 Junior Girls 5km race, Hailey Abbott lead her team's charge with a good start in the top 40 amongst the herd of 253 girls as they headed up the first hill and into the bush. When they popped out and headed for home, she was in 30th spot and outsprinted her rival to take 29th overall in a time of 22:42.74. Team mate Maddie Calder was the 4th counter on the team as she also had a very solid race and a big improvement from last year. Her time of 24:18.31 gave her 86th spot overall. They also won the 2nd place team award against 33 teams, also and improvement from their bronze medal last year.

Chatsworth Moggie Valley Timber Rebels travelled to Norwood for a tournament over the weekend.
The Rebels lost to Campbellford 3 to 0.
The Rebels won the second game 2 to 0 against Centre Hastings.

Minor Midget
The Owen Sound Subaru Junior Attack won the International Silver Stick Regional tournament in Owen Sound on the weekend.
The Junior Attack defeated the TNT (New Tecumseth) Tornados 4-2 in the final to win the tournament.
Ethan Kerr and Cole Gowan each scored a pair in the win.
Owen Sound advanced with a 4-2 win over the Southpoint Capitals in the semifinals.
Nolan Andrews, Tyson Morrison, Joey Ackert and Hunter McMillan scored.
In round-robin play Owen Sound went 1-1-1.
On Saturday afternoon, the Junior Attack defeated the Oakville Rangers 4-1.
Cole Gowan scored two, while Ethan Kerr and Tyson Morrison scored singles.
On Friday afternoon, Owen Sound tied Southpoint 1-1 with Ethan Kerr scoring the goal.
Owen Sound opened the tournament with a 4-2 loss to TNT.
Jaiden Whitlock and Nolan Andrews scored.
