Health Canada has approved the Pfizer vaccine for kids ages 12-15.
Dr. Supriya Sharma, the agency’s chief medical adviser says clinical trials in the United States show the vaccine is safe and very effective in children.
“Data from the clinical trial show that the vaccine’s efficacy after the second dose in preventing COVID-19 in this younger age group was 100 percent,” she said. “There were over 1,000 people in each of the two groups – one that did not receive the vaccine and one that did. In the group that did not receive the vaccine, there were 18 cases of COVID-19, and in the group that received the vaccine there were zero.”
It will be up to the federal and provincial governments to decide when the vaccine can actually be rolled out and administered to those under 16.
