Ontario Hockey League
Owen Sound Attack 5 Sarnia Sting 0
Flint Firebirds 7 Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds 4
Attack 5 Sting 0
Netminder Mack Guzda stopped 30 shots to post the shutout for the Attack.
The shutout by Guzda is the 5th of his Ontario Hockey League career which ties him with Mike Brown and Curtis Sanford for 3rd all time in Plater-Attack franchise history. Michael McNiven holds the franchise record with 14 shutouts in his career.
Also notable, the shutout by Guzda marks the first time the Platers-Attack franchise has blanked the opposition.
dating back to the Platers arrival in Owen Sound in 1989, Owen Sound had never posted a shutout victory over the Cornwall Royals, the Newmarket Royals or the Sarnia Sting until Guzda turned in the shutout in this game.
Guzda was staked to 2-0 lead by the midway point of the opening period on goals by Sergey Popov & Aidan Dudas.
However, Sarnia came out very strong in the 2nd period only to be denied by Guzda.
Barret Kirwin gave the Attack a 3-0 lead on a power play goal in the 2nd period and then 3rd period goals by Brady Lyle & Matt Philip sealed the victory.
The win may have been costly for Owen Sound as Aidan Dudas who had a pair of points in the game departed after a crunching check from Sarnia's Kelton Hatcher at center ice.
The initial report post game from the Attack was that Dudas was okay and night be a touch sore on Thursday.
The win by the Attack moves them into 7th place in the highly competitive Western Conference.
Owen Sound is 2 points back of Flint who won 7-4 at Sault Ste Marie and 1 point back of Guelph, although the Storm have 2 games in hand.
Erie is 8th in the Conference only 2 points behind Owen Sound and the Otters will host the Attack this weekend in a doubleheader at the Erie Insurance Arena ( You can hear both games live on 560 CFOS with Terry's Trailer Service-Kia of Owen Sound Bearadio )
The loss leaves Sarnia at 36 points on the year, 10 points back of Erie for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Sarnia has lost 13 of their last 14 games.
Friday, the Sting are at Kitchener to meet the Rangers who have points in 12 straight games
