For the first time in more than 20 years, high school teachers across the province are walking off the job.
At midnight it was confirmed that a settlement was not reached between the province and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF), so union members are proceeding with a one day strike.
That means all Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) secondary schools and adult learning centres will be closed to students today, while elementary schools are not affected.
However, all Grade 7/8 students at Elmvale District High School and Stayner Collegiate Institute will still report to school.
All Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB) will be closed for students today.
And all secondary schools and Adult and Alternate Education Centre sites in Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) will be closed to students today, but elementary schools will remain open.
The job action by members of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) marks the first provincewide strike by public high school teachers since 1997, when teachers walked off the job to protest cuts made by then-premier Mike Harris.
All of the closed schools will reopen as usual tomorrow, Thursday, December 5.
