The Canadian U17 Junior Men’s National Team got their bats going and blanked previously unbeaten Mexico 7-0 in five innings at the Pan American Softball Championship on Tuesday. Andrew Van Boekel (Bright, Ont.) limited Mexico to only one hit over four strong innings and Canada got a three-run homerun by Matthew Weiler (Hepworth, Ont.) in the top of the first as Mexico was never in the game.
Team Canada did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard early, as Mason McKay (Tavistock, Ont.) drew a one-out walk, moved up to third on a single to left by Connor Brooks (Napanee, Ont.) and scored on a single by Jackson Pegelo (Cargill, Ont.) that dropped in front of the diving centerfielder to open the scoring in the top of the first inning. Weiler immediately stepped up and drilled the first pitch he saw deep over the centerfield fence, giving Canada a big 4-0 lead. In the top of the second, Brock Fencott (Belleville, Ont.) reached on an infield single to third and raced around to score when the third baseman threw the ball away at first on a ground ball and the catcher was unable to secure the ball on the play at the plate.
Pegelo led off the third with a double to center, advanced to third on a passed ball and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Max Major (Delisle, Sask.). After drawing a walk, Weiler went on to score on a passed ball as Canada built a 7-0 lead.
Mexico got its only hit in the game on a bunt single to lead off the bottom of the fourth, but Van Boekel went on to leave him stranded at first with fly out to left and a par of strikeouts. Reese Yantzi (Shakespeare, Ont.) retired Mexico in order in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the run-ahead rule.
Van Boekel allowed only one hit and struck out four in his four innings of work to earn the win, while Yantzi struck out one in his clean inning. Weiler’s three-run homerun was the key hit for Canada, with Pegelo going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Brooks and Fencott each singled and scored to round out Canada’s five hits.
The win improved Canada’s record to 2-1 while Mexico dropped to 3-1. A key game between the United States (1-1) and Argentina (1-1) will take place this evening. Canada will be back in action with a game against Panama (1-2) at 2:00pm CST (3:00pm EST) on Wednesday.

Halifax Mooseheads forward Raphael Lavoie played the overtime hero in Game 2 of the 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series to help Team QMJHL come away with a 4-3 victory.
The deciding goal marked the second tally of the night for Lavoie, who opened the scoring less than two minutes into the initial frame on a quick low shot that beat Russian netminder Amir Miftakhov who made his first appearance of the tournament.
Closing out the first period, the Russians evened the score when forward Egor Sokolov of the Cape Breton Eagles notched his first of the tournament after side stepping the defender before breaking into the crease and burying his own second chance to pick up a late marker.
Team QMJHL then regained its lead with another early goal coming at the 1:52 mark of the second period when Baie-Comeau Drakkar forward and Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Nathan Legare buried a perfect no-look feed from defenceman and 2020 NHL Draft hopeful Jeremie Poirier.
Russia would tie it however just 73 seconds later on a tremendous individual effort by Rimouski Oceanic forward
Dmitry Zavgorodniy who used his quick speed to drive to the net and put one by netminder Olivier Rodrigue of the hometown Moncton Wildcats. The tally marked the third of the tournament for the Calgary Flames prospect.
The second period was then met with another quick scoring succession as Russia first regained the lead following a goal by Maxim Groshev who worked relentlessly to bang home a puck to give the Russians a 3-2 lead.
But it was just 35 seconds later when Team QMJHL again capitalized on a goal by Drummondville Voltigeurs forward and 2020 NHL Draft eligible Dawson Mercer who connected with Wildcats hero Jakob Pelletier for the second game in a row to even the game at three a side. Through two contests, Mercer, who was the Player of the Game for Team QMJHL in Game 1, has collected two goals and one assist.
Overtime was then needed after a scoreless third period sent the two sides to extra time knotted at three before Lavoie capitalized from in close to cap the comeback for Team QMJHL as the squad picked up its first win in the annual showcase for the first time since 2017.
In all, Tuesday marked the second straight game in which Lavoie has found the scoresheet after he recorded his first goal in Monday’s series opener. The budding talent now stands with a team-leading three goals across two games.
The 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series, which sees the CHL hold a 4-2 point margin through two games, now shifts to Kitchener on Thursday where Team OHL led by Owen Sound Attack forward and Los Angeles Kings prospect Aidan Dudas will take on the Russians before shifting to London on Monday.
The Ontario Hockey League, in association with the Canadian Hockey League, today announced that Guelph Storm teammates Nico Daws and Cam Hillis have been added to the Team OHL roster for Game 3 of the 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series scheduled for Thursday, November 7 in Kitchener.
Daws replaces Kitchener Rangers goaltender Jacob Ingham who is unable to compete due to injury, while Hillis replaces injured Barrie Colts forward Ryan Suzuki.
Additional roster notes for Game 3 include the addition of Ottawa 67's goaltender Cedrick Andree to the Team OHL lineup. He'll take the place of Peterborough Petes goaltender Hunter Jones who shifts into Andree's former spot for Game 4 of the series on Monday in London.
Daws, a 19-year-old from Burlington, Ont. currently leads the OHL with a .933 save percentage to go along with a 2.48 goals-against average and 5-1-1-2 record over nine appearances this season. The 6-foot-4, 202Ib. netminder is in the midst of his third OHL season after hoisting the Robertson Cup as an OHL champion with the Storm last spring. Daws was Guelph's seventh round pick in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection and was recently named OHL 'On the Run' Player of the Week for the week of games ending October 27th.
A third round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in the 2018 NHL Draft, Storm captain Cam Hillis is currently second in team scoring with 20 points (5-15–20) over 14 games this season. The 19-year-old Enniskillen, Ont. native is in his third OHL season, coming off an injury-shortened 2018-19 campaign that yielded 22 points (10-12–22) over 33 games. Hillis represented Team Cherry at the 2018 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Guelph before being selected by the Canadiens. The former OHL Cup champion was Guelph's second round (29th overall) pick in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection.

Danny Zhilkin (Mississauga, Ont./Guelph, OHL) tied it on the power play with 1:12 to go and Shane Wright (Burlington, Ont./Kingston, OHL) finished it 3:20 into overtime as Canada Black closed out the preliminary round at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a 5-4 win over the United States on Tuesday afternoon.
The single point the Americans earned for the extra-time loss was enough to clinch first place in Group A despite Black going through the prelims without a loss – it beat the U.S. and Canada White in overtime, and downed the Czech Republic in a shootout.
