An Orillia councillor feels the city is on shaky ground by agreeing to cover more than $400,000 in development charges for the Building Hope project.
Last night, council comittee agreed to waive the development charges subject to the outcome of a meeting with County of Simcoe staff.
The Lighthouse Soup Kitchen and Shelter made a pitch for the break at council last week.
Councillor Pat Hehn supports the project but is concerned more charities and non-profits will come calling in the future seeking the same thing.
She says in about 15 years the city will be looking at a new hospital and she wonders what that ask will be.
Hehn says there are other organizations which are as equally as deserving, such as The Sharing Place and Green Haven Shelter for Women.
She wants to know where all the money is going to come from.
The Lighthouse plans to roll out the Building Hope project in phases that will include a shelter, supportive housing and affordable housing units.
Committee's decision still requires approval by full council at its meeting next week.
