An Orillia group wants the city to install a large solar generating station on the roof of the new recreation centre. Gord Ball of Orillia Community Energy says the roof could generate 150 Kilowatts of power.
He's proposing the installation costs be paid for by a public fundraising campaign and by the city.
He suggested to council Monday night they could get the cash from two sources —
One would be the savings generated by the solar panels.
The second would be the money they already collect from Orillia Power which rents roof space on several city owned buildings for solar panels.
Council has referred the project to staff for some advice on whether it should proceed.
