Severn Township Mayor Mike Burkett says ultimately, it'll be up to Health Canada to tame what he calls “the wild west” of medical cannabis production.
Burkett says a proposed zoning by-law may help–but the courts have ruled people have the right to grow pot for personal use and that seems to trump whatever local regulations are enacted.
The mayor adds there is at least one local site with a valid Health Canada permit that seems to be taking that right to the extreme.
Neighbours have complained about the strong odour coming from the site but there's little the township can do.
A by-law to regulate commercial grow ops will be considered by Severn council in May, but it will have limited effect on those with medical permits to grow their own supply.
