The next OPP commissioner will be Thomas Carrique, currently the deputy chief of York Regional Police.
His appointment was announced less than a week after 72 year old Ron Taverner, a friend of Premier Ford's, withdrew from the job.
The appointment of Taverner last fall sparked controversy and triggered an integrity commissioner investigation.
Taverner did not meet the criteria originally listed for the commissioner's job, and the government admitted it lowered the requirements to attract a wider ranger of candidates.
Carrique has spent his entire 29-year career with York police and has worked in uniform patrol, criminal investigations, investigate services, traffic, marine, public order and the administration and operations branches.
He begins his new job April 8.
