World Junior Nordic Championships
at Finland
Julian Smith of Oxenden finished 19th in the 1.6 km classic sprint
Smith placed 22nd in the qualifier with a time of 3:37.19.
In the quarter finals, Smith was 4th in a time of 3:26.13, beating his qualifying time by more than 10 seconds.
It appeared the former Georgian Bay Nordic grad would advance to the semi-finals, but the fifth and final heat had an athlete who just beat Smith out by 0.18 seconds
The final result of 19th represents his best finish on the world stage. In the past he had been 39th (in Kazakhstan, 2015) and 34th ( in Utah, 2017).
The NHL Central Scouting Bureau has released their MidTerm rankings

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Philadelphia Flyers prospect Morgan Frost of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds is the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week for the regular season week ending January 20 with 10 points in three games scoring seven goals and three assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-10.
Frost earns the award for the second time this season helping the Greyhounds to a trio of road victories against Central Division competition to extend their winning-streak to six games. His week was highlighted by an impressive five-goal performance on Sunday earning first star honours of the 7-4 win over the Sudbury Wolves. This marked
Frost’s first career OHL hat-trick and included two even strength goals, one power play, one shorthanded, and an empty-net tally for the league’s top single game scoring output of the season. His five goals came one shy of the franchise record of six produced by Paul Mancini back in 1978. On Saturday night in Barrie, home of where Frost played his minor hockey, he scored twice with two assists and was named second star of the 8-5 win over the Colts.
His week also included an assist on Thursday night contributing to a 5-1 win against the North Bay Battalion. The Greyhounds remain in first place atop the West Division standings with a 30-10-4-1 record.
A 19-year-old from Aurora, Ont., Frost is playing in his fourth season with the Greyhounds who chose him in the fourth round of the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. He is currently third in OHL scoring with 75 points in just 38 games and leads the league with a 1.97 points-per-game average. He’s produced in all six games since returning from the World Junior Championship where he was a member of Canada’s National Junior Team. Frost’s 30 goals this season brings his career total to 99 in 237 games played where he’s amassed 276 points. He was chosen by the Flyers in the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft.
Also considered for the award this week was Los Angeles Kings prospect Akil Thomas of the Niagara IceDogs with 10 points over three games including five goals and five assists, and Dallas Stars prospect Riley Damiani of the Kitchener Rangers who picked up eight assists in just two games. In goal, Stephen Dhillon backstopped the IceDogs to three wins recording one shutout and making 102 saves in total for a 1.67 goals-against-average with a .953 save percentage.
