While our region will miss the worst impact of a weekend winter storm, there will be no escaping the bitterly cold temperatures.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Mitch Meredith says cold snaps are not uncommon in mid to late January and this one will only have a three day shelf life.
Still, it will be bone rattling cold, with daytime highs Saturday and Sunday between minus 16 and minus 20, and that doesn't include the wind chill.
Meredith says the wind chill will be between minus 25 and minus 30 , with Sunday night the most frigid, where it could feel like minus 40.
With this kind of cold, there is the risk of frostbite and exposed skin can freeze within minutes.
Meredith says if you are going to be working outdoors or even travelling, make sure you are prepared, just in case, and wear extra layers.
The normal high for this time of year is minus 4 and we should be back to a seasonal temperature on Tuesday.
