In the wake of a recent increase in thefts of snowmobiles and ATV's, police are urging residents to secure their property.
Many people enjoy recreational use of snowmobiles and ATV's, and take great pride in their machines. Sadly, these machines offer a dangerous combination of being both valuable, and portable.
Here are a few tips police have to stave off would-be thieves and opportunists, and protect your property:
Out of sight, out of mind – Try to secure and store your machines and equipment out of plain view.
Lock it or lose it – There are many options available to secure your machines and equipment. Though cables, chains and padlocks can be defeated, they certainly are a strong deterrent. The more visible your locks are, the less likely any thieves will even approach them. If you store your machines on or in a trailer, please take precautions to secure the trailer. Tongue locks are a relatively inexpensive way to help ensure your trailer stays where you left it.
Light it up – The installation of permanent or motion sensing lighting has always been an effective way to deter unwanted visitors.
Should you be displaying or advertising your machine for sale, police say to take extra care to secure it, especially if it is sitting at the end of your driveway!
Though this message is directed to snowmobiles and ATVs, these tips apply to all types of property. Police encourage everyone to take the time to protect their property, and as always ride responsibly.
