Former Conservative MP Tony Clement has posted a letter to his website addressed to constituents admitting to inappropriate exchanges online.
Clement says that during a period of personal difficulty and weakness, he engaged in inappropriate exchanges that crossed lines that should never have been crossed and that “these exchanges led to acts of infidelity.”
Clement says one exchange led to a woman being offered money by an anonymous social media account in exchange for the disclosure of intimate and personal information.
He says he reported that case to police last summer.
Another inappropriate exchange, he says, led to foreign actors attempting to use his indiscretion for financial extortion.
Clement says the exchanges were wrong and should never have occurred and that pride and vanity got the better of him.
