A new committee of Council aims to improve food security in Orillia.
The new committee will take effect with the new Council term in December.
The suggested make up of the new committee would see one representative from Georgian College, Lakehead University, the Sharing Place Food Bank, City Council, and City staff.
Councillor Sarah Valiquette-Thompson says the Orillia Food Council has been working hard to get to where they are today.
She says this is a huge step forward in the local food movement and it is great that this is finally happening.
Valiquette-Thompson — who is a member of the food council — says this committee will be able to suggest things like policies, alternative growing methods, and urban farming ideas.
She says those are things that would be going through the food council that will then be forwarded to City Council for debate and direction.
Valiquette-Thompson says they will also discuss the future of community gardens in Orillia including where to host these gardens.
She says this is another exciting opportunity for the new committee and by becoming a committee of Council they can continue to drive it forward.
