Huron-Bruce Progressive Conservative MPP and Education Minister Lisa Thompson is defending the province's recent moves in classrooms across Ontario.
Thompson took to the floor of the legislature to promote the Education Ministry's two priorities: respecting parents, and preparing students for their futures.
In the summer, the province announced changes to Ontario's sex education curriculum, reverting to the program last updated in 1998.
Despite the campaign promise by Premier Doug Ford to do so, the sex education changes prompted backlash from parents, along with a scheduled secondary school walk-out by Ontario's high school students.
Thompson and the province have referred to this program during media interviews and school board correspondence as the 2014 physical education curriculum, as well as the 2010 and 2018 programs.
The Education Minister also promised to “restore proven methods of teaching the fundamentals” of mathematics, after EQAO officials reported decreasing math scores among Ontario students due to the policies of the previous Liberal government.
In a meeting a Queen's Park, Thompson reiterated the province's commitment to pledges made during Premier Doug Ford's campaign to Ontario's leadership.
Consultations with parents and school board officials are expected in the coming months on a revised sex education curriculum, which would co-opt the 2015 model.
