Environment Canada confirms there was a tornado in the Hawkestone area, south of Orillia.
Meteorologist Geff Coulson says from social media and based on dashcam video from a severe weather scientist with Environment Canada, officials were able to confirm a twister did touch down last night(MON).
Coulson says the storm caused tree damage and snapped an antenna.
Based on that evidence, he says the winds were in excess of 100 kilometres an hour.
A team from Environment Canada will be in the region looking for damage to determine the strength of the twister and if there were any other tornadoes.
Coulson says the storm really blew up around 7 last evening (MON) as it came inland from Georgian Bay, and then as it approached Lake Simcoe, it became a very potent storm that produced a tornado.
He says the investigation can be helped along if anyone has imagery of the twister or damage from the storm to send it to Environment Canada at onstorm@canada.ca, and include the exact location and the time the picture was taken.
Coulson says the threat of severe weather including possible tornadoes will continue through Wednesday as southern Ontario remains in the grip of muggy air.
Much cooler and less humid conditions are on tap, beginning Thursday.
