Visitors to Couchiching Beach Park will not be seeing the Champlain monument this summer.
The City of Orillia received a letter from Parks Canada that work on reinstalling the statue of Samuel de Champlain is being put on hold.
During the restoration, Parks Canada says concerns were raised over the monuments representation of Indigenous people.
They say they have been working with stakeholders on opportunities to develop a balanced and representative reflection of history of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
They are suggesting City Council form a joint committee consisting of representatives from the City, Parks Canada, other key partners and stakeholders to develop a plan for the Champlain monument, including the possible education or art installations, for next summer.
The monument was taken down last year as part of the restoration.
The letter from Parks Canada is part of the consent agenda for Thursday's Council meeting.
