With many people returning home for the Christmas holidays, the O-P-P wants to make sure everyone enjoys the season on a happy note.
There is the usual message about responsible driving but there are also a few other things that may not be on the top of everyone’s mind.
Constable Gerry Dwyer of the Orillia O-P-P detachment says if you are traveling by car this weekend to go slow if there is snow on the roads.
He also says motorists should install snow tires on their vehicles.
Dwyer says when people do have to travel, to ensure that their vehicle has a full tank of gas and windshield washer fluid.
He says it is also good to know the route you are taking and to let relatives or friends know when they can expect you to arrive.
He says drivers often find themselves in ditches along the side of the road in the middle of a rural area.
He says if they don’t have a cell phone with them, there is no way to phone for help.
Dwyer is also advising people to be careful when it comes to the lighting of candles in homes.
He says the O-P-P and the fire departments often get calls about these kinds of fires where it is started from candles.
He says it is basic safety around the home.
